Layers of Memory
Memories are something every individual has. We revisit them in our storytelling to others. We capture them with photographs or keepsakes. Sometimes we forget them until something in the environment reminds us. We live in a material world where material things determine who we are, but these material things can also evoke memories and spiritual connections. A photograph, a place, an object, can take us back to those days that lives in our hearts forever. All these memories are the layers of life that form us as individuals and makes us who we are.
This exhibition is based on the observations of my life and how different objects, places and natural surroundings remind me of different times in my life. Life is full of layers, life is full of memories, life is a journey. The wonderful thing is that while you are on the journey sometimes you are unaware of where the path is leading you. It is only when you look back and you look close into those layers and moments in time that you see where you've been and who you are.
The artwork is created using CNC (computer numerical control) technology. Images are etched on glass and cutouts are made on thin plywood. The artwork of each box is composed of personal photography. Objects, people, natural surroundings and places are presented in a illuminated light box. Mirrors are used to multiply imagery and create layers of information where you not only see two, but your own reflection making you part of it and allowing your own approach to the image.
